Section H—Hemorrhagic Bowel Syndrome
NOTE: Please read this to the Producer in its entirety.
Hemorrhagic bowel syndrome (HBS) is a highly fatal intestinal disease of milking cows. HBS is
characterized by sudden onset of bloody feces, with or without intestinal obstruction. Cows with HBS
have a high death rate, approaching 70 to 80 percent. Sudden death without prior signs is common. Both
medical and surgical treatments have been relatively unsuccessful. A bloody bowel accompanied by a
blood clot that obstructs the intestine may be observed at necropsy.
