Collection Schedule
Form Approved
OMB Number 0579-0205
Approval expires: 4/30/10
Individual fecal and environmental manure/slurry samples are collected on a schedule.
Your Coordinator will explain the collection schedule to you.
The supplied Fecal Kit contains the collection materials for both the individual fecal samples and 2nd set of
environmental samples.
Fecal Samples
Allocated among the participating states, 125 farms will have 35 individual fecal samples taken: a maximum
of 5 sick cows, a maximum of 5 cull cows, and the remaining samples from cows with saleable milk.
Samples must be collected Sunday through Wednesday and shipped within 24 hours of collection.
1. Freeze the ice packs at least 24 hours before collection. Before collection, write on each of the Fecal
Labels the State FIPS and Operation Number and complete the top portion of the submission form.
The Kit Number to use is printed on the labels.
2. Use a new sleeve for each cow.
3. From each cow, collect 1 golf-ball size fecal sample by rectal extraction using the supplied sleeve.
Place in a whirlpak bag, express air, twist down twice, clean off, and put on a label.
4. Write the Animal’s ID on the label and complete the Fecal Submission Form for the sample/animal.
5. Cool down samples with ice packs. Keep cool and, if necessary, replace ice packs so samples are
shipped with frozen ice. DO NOT freeze samples.
6. Place the yellow copy of the submission form in the shipping box.
7. ALSO place the Environmental samples (collected in conical tubes) in the sample box. Ship within 24
hours.
8. Complete the collection information at the bottom and send the original to your Coordinator.
Environmental Samples
These 125 operations will have an additional set of environmental (manure/slurry) samples collected in 50ml
conical tubes.
Both the individual animal samples and the environmental samples in the conical tubes are shipped together
to ARS in Athens, Georgia.
See in the Field Handbook for more information.
According to the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, no persons are required to respond to a collection of information unless
it displays a valid OMB control number. The valid OMB control number for this information collection is 0579-0205. The time
required to complete this information collection is estimated to average 1.5 hour per response, including the time to review
instructions, search existing data resources, gather the data needed, and complete and review the information collected.
