RadNet is a national network of
stations collecting sampling media that include air, precipitation,
drinking water, and milk. Samples are sent to EPA National Air and
Radiation Environmental Lab (NAREL) in Montgomery, Alabama, where
they are analyzed for radioactivity. RadNet provides emergency
response/homeland security and ambient monitoring information on
levels of environmental radiation across the nation. All stations,
usually operated by state and local personnel, participate in
RadNet voluntarily. Station operators complete information forms
that accompany the samples. The forms request describe information
pertaining to sample location, e.g. sample type, sample location,
length of sampling period, and volume represented. Data from RadNet
are made available regularly on the Agency websites - Envirofacts
and the EPA web site under laboratories.

For the previous review of the
ICR for RadNet, the respondent burden hours were estimated to be
5,726 hours annually. Based on the number of current and new
respondents resulting from the expansion of the RadNet air
monitoring network, the respondent burden hours for this ICR are
estimated to be 9,333 hours annually, which amounts to an annual
net increase of 3,606 hours required of respondents. This increase
in annual respondent burden hours is attributed to the increased
number of air monitoring sampling stations scheduled in the ongoing
expansion and upgrade of the RadNet air monitoring network. The
expansion of the network will continue annually throughout the
duration of this ICR and up through 2012. In this ICR, the number
of air monitoring stations indicated for each year is 117. The
number 117 was derived by averaging the total number of air
monitors (real-time and conventional) anticipated to be in place
and operational for each of the three years covered by this
ICR.
