Changes to EDEN Data Categories for 2006-07
As with the EDEN data groups, ED seeks to minimize the number of changes to EDEN data
categories from one year to the next. The changes described in the following pages are deemed
necessary based on the discussions with ED program offices and state EDEN coordinators
described at the beginning of this document. Additionally, some of the changes are required in
order to align EDEN with the existing CCD data collections.
New Data Categories
The following table describes the data categories that are new to EDEN for 2006-07. For the
most part, these data categories are those required for the new data groups described in the
previous pages. There are a small number of new data categories that do not have any associated
data groups. These were added because a new summary category was needed. For example,
through 2005-06 EDEN only had one data category for sex that allowed Male and Female as the
only possible codes. As part of the CCD-EDEN merger, EDEN has added a new data category
Sex (Graduates) that can only be used with data group 306 Graduates/Completers Table. All
other data groups use Sex (Membership).

Dropped Data Categories
As part of the program office meetings that took place as input for the 2006-07 EDEN
data set, the EDEN team determined that a number of existing EDEN data categories do
not meet program office needs and will therefore be dropped from EDEN for 2006-07.

Data Category Changes
The changes shown in the following pages are the result of input from two important
sources: state EDEN coordinators and program offices in ED. The EDEN team strives to
minimize the number of changes to data categories from one year to the next but at the

same time recognizes that program office reporting needs change and that refinements
may be necessary to existing data groups in order to ensure consistent reporting from one
state to the next and maximize the number of states able to provide data.
The following pages show each data category that has a significant change. Data
categories with changes that are exclusively editorial are not included in this section. The
left side of the page shows the data category as approved for the 2005-06 EDEN
reporting cycle. The right side of the page shows the proposed data category for 200607. There are check boxes to the right of each element of the data category – Category
Name, Definition, Code Set, EDEN Data Groups. Additional notes regarding the
change(s) are provided in the far right column of each page.

Homeless children and youth have
been granted special educational
rights through the McKinney-Vento
Act. The Act requires every LEA,
whether or not it receives a
McKinney-Vento sugrant, to
designate a local liaison for
homeless children and youth, who
must ensure that homeless
children and youth are identified
and receive the educational
services for which they are
eligible. For the purposes of
reporting, there is no minimum
time limit to be considered
homeless. If a student is
homeless at any point in the
school year, they should be
reported as homeless for all tables
