Dear Name:

The Tennessee Valley Authority, in conjunction with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, is assessing the status of the safety harbors and safety landings located along the Tennessee River and its tributaries. This type of assessment was performed approximately 10 years ago. However, due to the changing river conditions and uses over the past several years, along with the growing demand for lakefront property access, we feel that it is important to identify and preserve the most essential and useful safety harbors and safety landings that are currently designated. Only those safety harbors and safety landings that are considered nonessential and unusable by the towing industry would be discontinued.

The enclosed attached survey form lists all of the safety harbors and safety landings and the type of mooring facilities available, if any. It can be completed electronically or printed out. Columns are provided for you to make a recommendation to retain or release the safety harbor or safety landing, as well as provide comments on the usefulness of each. Please be specific and include information such as:

  • Have you ever used it?

  • Would you ever use it and why/why not, e.g. distance from the navigation channel, lack of water depth, insufficient mooring, and/or residential development along the surrounding shoreline?

  • How could it be improved?

We would also like to get some general information from you on several other items. Please provide your comments on the attached Word document and mail or email it back with your survey.

We know that your time is limited; however, your cooperation in this effort is crucial since you are the primary beneficiary of these facilities. The information that you provide us will support the justification of preserving these stretches of shoreline for commercial navigation uses. We welcome comments for all areas, but suggest focusing your review on the portion of the river that your tows transit. Please return your completed survey forms by February 26 to [email protected] or the following address:
