FERC's records retention regulations
cover records maintained by public utilities and licensees, natural
gas and oil pipeline companies. These records serve as the basis
for required rate filings and reports submitted to FERC. The
records are retained in order to be reviewed by FERC staff during
periodic compliance reviews, special analyses performed as deemed
necessary by FERC and serve as a basis in complaint proceedings.
FERC issued Order No. 617 reducing the retention periods to make
reductions and elimination of unnecessary burden on jurisdictional
entities.
There is a change to the burden
as a result of an adjustment in the number of entities that are
subject to the Commissions jurisdiction. This adjustment reflects
consolidation within the industries regulated by FERC.
Consolidation has occurred due to mergers, acquisitions or
withdrawing from the industry.
