Appendix D – Response to Comments

On July 3, 2007, B. Sachau submitted comments to EPA on the ICR for the
Questionnaire for Nominees for the Annual National Clean Water Act Recognition
Awards. EPA ICR No. 1287.09, OMB Control No. 2040-0101. Following is a verbatim
reproduction of the comment and EPA’s response.

i think this is a waste of tax dollars. it seems that when one contacts the epa they are not
concentrating or focusing on what really is their job - to make sure we have
clean/air/water. i think this banquet stuff is a real time waster. i know i contacted epa in
ny several weeks ago regarding lead deposition from a shooting range on the passaic river
in florham park nj and have had absolutely no response from t his agency several weeks
later to indicate that they are at all interested in this complaint about lead depositoin
going into the river. i guess they are too busy planning awards ceremonies.
i just think this award and "ceremony" thing takes away from the work that is vital. lead
lasts for ten thousand years in the environment once deposited.

Response:
EPA acknowledges the comment. However, Section 501 (e) of the Clean Water Act
(CWA), as amended authorizes a program to recognize municipalities and industries that
demonstrate outstanding technological achievements, innovative processes, devices or
other outstanding methods in their waste treatment and pollution abatement programs.
The program is intended educate the public about the contributions that publicly-owned
wastewater treatment facilities make to clean water and to recognize communities that go
far beyond the minimum needed to meet Clean Water Act requirements.
