An international system exists to use satellites to detect and locate ships, aircrft, orindividuals in distress if they are equipped with an emergency radio beacon. Persons purchasing such a beacon must register itwith NOAA. The data provided in the registration can assist in identifying who is in trouble and also suppressing the consequences of false alarms.
