The National Cancer Institute (NCI) proposes conducting a needs assessment and usability testing of the Science of Team Science (TS) Toolkit Website through web-based testing and follow-up interviews. The goal of this needs assessment and usability testing is to improve the functionality and content coverage of the TS Toolkit Website, which was developed as an on-line interactive resource center for users to learn about, engage in, and conduct research related to team science. The usability testing and interviews will be conducted on stakeholders from the team science community as well as those who are new to the team science field. The data collected will be analyzed and incorporated into the refinement of the website.

NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program is an authoritative source of information on cancer incidence and survival in the United States. Certified Tumor Registrars (CTRs) play an instrumental role in facilitating the acquisition and dissemination of this high quality data. For that reason, training and supporting both current and aspiring CTRs is critical to SRP’s ongoing success. The SEER Training Website is an essential tool that is used to teach CTRs, and hone their skills in the fields of cancer registration and surveillance. Iterative testing of the SEER Training Website is planned to determine if the site is meeting the needs of current and aspiring CTRs, and other interested users who utilize the webpage. The goal is to ensure that visitors can find appropriate information quickly and easily and that they can comfortably navigate through the various training modules. Three focus groups (with nine individuals per group) will be recruited from cancer registries and other population groups who have been exposed to the SEER Training Website. They will use the site to see if it meets their needs in one-on-one usability sessions conducted either in-person, or via remote web-conferencing software (allowing a wider geographic selection of participants) by usability professionals. The goal of the participants in the test will be to navigate the SEER Training Website, and attempt to locate and utilize the information, tools, and training modules that are available. Problems will be prioritized by the project leadership, and solutions to them will be implemented.

This evaluation will determine the effectiveness and usability of the Epidemiology and Genetics Research Program’s (EGRP) website, a key communication channel with extramural cancer epidemiologists (its primary target audience), and other stakeholders, such as cancer advocates.
EGRP is the largest funder of cancer epidemiology grants nationally and worldwide. This website provides guidance about EGRP’s research priorities, research resources, funding opportunities, grantsmanship issues, and relevant news. Significant resources are dedicated to maintaining the website (which consists of more than 900 pages); however, only two sections of the website have been evaluated from a user’s perspective, and both sections have changed substantially since they were evaluated 8 to 10 years ago.
The goal is to refine the EGRP website in a stepwise manner by iteratively testing with small pools of users, responding to issues, and then testing again. The selection process will seek to include four types of users who are junior or experienced epidemiologists, cancer fellows, and cancer advocates. The iterative testing will consist of up 108 individuals. Because the NIH Evaluation Set Aside funds need to be obligated by the end of this fiscal year, August 1, 2010 is the targeted start date and the estimated completion date is February 25, 2011.

__X___ OTHER: The majority of the usability test sessions will be run remotely using Web conferencing software to allow flexibility in scheduling users so they do not need to be in the Washington, D.C., metro area. If possible, one round of one-on-one individual in-person testing will also be conducted at the annual Cohort Consortium meeting which will take place in November 2010 in Atlanta, GA.
