The National Science Foundation congratulates Terence
mathematics professor at the University of California at
Angeles, as the 2008 Alan T. Waterman award winner. T
work in partial differential equations, combinatorics, num
theory and harmonic analysis has had a tremendous imp
across several mathematical areas.

Background
Congress established the Alan T. Waterman Award in August 1975 to mark the
Anniversary of the National Science Foundation and to honor its first Director. T
award recognizes an outstanding young researcher in any field of science or en
supported by the National Science Foundation. In addition to a medal, the awa
receives a grant of $500,000 over a three year period for scientific research or
study in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, social, or other sc
the institution of the recipient's choice.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria
z Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must be 3
age or younger or not more than 7 years beyond receipt of the Ph.D. de
December 31 of the year in which they are nominated. Candidates eligib
2008 award must be born on or after 1972, or received their Ph.D. on o
2000.
z Candidates should have demonstrated exceptional individual achieveme
scientific or engineering research of sufficient quality to place them at th
forefront of their peers. Criteria include originality, innovation, and sign
impact on the field.

z Nomination packages consist of a nomination and four letters of referen
submitted via FastLane https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/honawards/
z The names of four references are required for each nomination. The ref
cannot come from the nominee’s home institution. References must be

by the nominator and submitted by the established FastLane deadline.
