The National Science Foundation (NSF) administers several honorary awards, among them the President's National Medal of Science, the Alan T. Waterman Award, the National Science Board (NSB) Vannevar Bush Award, the NSB Science and Socity Award, the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) program, and the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program.
A review of the amount of time needed and the number of applicants to the National Medal of Science, the Alan T. Waterman Award, the Vannervar Bush Award and the Science and Society Award led to either a decrease in the number of applicants and burdent time (Bush and Science and Society), and an increase in applicants (NMS and the Waterman Award).
