Responses to IRB Minutes from 8/7/06 Meeting


Request for Approval of Research Protocol

  1. Under II. Study Description, A. Sample Size. Specify minimum number of interviews per facility.

    • Done. We have noted a minimum sample size of 50 per facility.

  2. Under VI. Protection of Subject, C. Description of Procedures to Reduce or Alleviate Risks. Add a description of the training on the distressed respondent protocol that is provided to field interviewers.

    • Done. We have added information on the content of the training and the involvement of staff from Stop Prisoner Rape to provide this training.

  3. Under VI. Protection of Subjects, D. Description of Security Measures. Add information about the procedures for receiving and storing data. Indicate that hard copy samples will be labeled with disposition codes that will not be interpretable by facility staff. Verify that the hard copy samples and PAPI surveys will be destroyed when data analysis is complete. Verity that the link between the field ID numbers and study ID numbers will be destroyed at the end of the data analysis.

PAPI

  1. Add “For your own protection, do not put your name on this survey” at either the beginning or end of the questionnaire.

  • We have revised this sentence slightly to clarify why the inmate should avoid putting his/her name on the form. The following sentence has been added to the first page of the questionnaire: To protect your privacy, do not put your name on this questionnaire.


PAPI Consent Form

  1. First paragraph, third sentence, Change “countries” to “country”.

  • Done. See attached form.

  1. Second paragraph, delete the last sentence.

  • Done. See attached form.


Additional Requirements

  1. Provide a copy of the lead letter (from BJS) that will be disseminated to the facilities.

  • We will provide this letter to the IRB as soon as BJS drafts it.

  1. Add debriefing questions to the PAPI portion of the main study and continue to administer ACASI version.

  • Done. See attached PAPI instrument for content of PAPI debriefing items.

  1. Provide the script that will be used if a facility staff inquires why an inmate would not be eligible for the study.

  • The following response will be given by interviewers when they are asked this questions: “I am sorry but I am not able to share that information.”

  1. That the plans for presenting and disseminating study data/findings are provided to the IRB for review and approval before any data or findings are released to the public or individual correctional facilities.

  • The following text is included in our protocol: Before any data or findings are released to the public or individual correctional facilities, the project management will share plans for release and dissemination with the IRB to help ensure that participant confidentiality will be maintained throughout the dissemination process in compliance with the relevant federal regulations.
