Form 4684 is used by taxpayers to compute their gain or loss from casualties or thefts, and to summarize such gains and losses. The data is used to verify that the correct gain or loss has been computed. Changes were made to the forms under this approval number to comply with P.L. 110-343, the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. Under this new law, changes were made to include losses when the main home has been destroyed. Along with other changes in the form and instruction, these changes resulted in a total burden increase of 187,000 hours.
