Topic Outline for Unstructured Interviews
Proposed content of interview (tailored to different types of GQ)
1. Basic information of the facility
∙ Type of group quarters
∙ Maximum capacity, current capacity
∙ Brief description of the facility and residents
∙ How many floors, wings and buildings?
2. Fluidity of the population
∙ Turnover rate of residents? Length of stay? Return rate?
∙ Is this facility open year round? In particular, will it be open from June through August for a coverage measurement study?
∙ Will the same residents be there if we return for a second visit at a later date?
∙ Do residents have other places to live or stay?
3. Best mode to collect information about the residents
∙ Are residents available for a self response?
∙ Are residents capable of self response?
∙ Proxy: anyone at the facility who can respond for the person? Relatives of respondents or staff? Will they have the knowledge of the residents?
∙ Will
there be knowledgeable staff available to assist the interviews with
residents and the use of records?
4. Record keeping
∙ How often do they update the records?
∙ How accurate do they think the records are?
∙ Whom to contact or work with to obtain the records?
∙ Can the facility provide a list of residents who were living or staying there on April 1st 2010? What type of information are available? Ask about issues, problems and difficulties for such request.
5. Facility Access
∙ Is parking available? Is permit needed?
∙ Need escort to enter building? If so whom?
∙ Whom to contact?
