Respondent Debriefing Questions for August 2009 PFU Operational Test

Situation 1

If R answers (NO to Section A, Q1) & (Yes to Section A, Q1b), then ask:

You said you never heard of FOLLOWUP name, but you know who lived at SAMPLE ADDRESS on DATE. Tell me more about who lived here/there, and how well you knew them.

(If needed) Do you know how long they’ve lived at SAMPLE ADDRESS?

Do you know when they moved in, or other places where they lived or stayed during 2008?

Situation 2

If R answers (Yes to Section A, Q1) & (No to Section A, Q1a), then ask:

You said you have heard of FOLLOWUP name, but you don’t know her/him well enough to answer questions about where s/he was living in 2008 and other places where s/he stayed.

We are trying to see if our questions are working adequately. Why did you answer “no” to that question? What types of questions did you think we were going to ask?

(If needed) For this test, the Census Bureau needs to count everyone at their usual residence on October 1, 2008. I’m going to ask you some specific questions about NAME.

Do you know where FOLLOWUP NAME lived on October 1st of last year?

(If needed) Where was that?

Do you know things like whether NAME was in the military or in college or had a second residence?

Do you know who else lived at SAMPLE ADDRESS on October 1st?

(If needed) Who was that?

Situation 3

R answers Yes to Q1a, but then seems hesitant when answering residence questions in Section C, or answers don’t know to one or more of those questions in that Section.

You said you knew the FOLLOWUP name well enough to answer questions about where s/he was living in 2008 and other places where s/he stayed. What types of questions did you think we were going to ask?

You seemed hesitant/You answered “Don’t know” to QUESTION. Can you tell me more about what you were thinking when we asked that question? What about the respondent’s living situation or made you answer that way?

Unscripted probes if needed.
