The HPV test and the Pap test

Screening for cervical cancer with 2 tests, the HPV test and the Pap test is approved for women age 30 and older.

If you have a normal Pap test and a negative HPV test, it is safe to wait 3 years until your next Pap test.

So….what’s the buzz about getting
screened every 3-years
instead of every year
?

If you are 30 years or older…AND…

your Pap test result is normal…AND…

your HPV test result is negative…THEN…

it is safe to wait 3 years before being tested
again for cervical cancer because your chance of getting cancer is low.

Now, that’s good news!

1 woman + 2 negative tests = 3 years!

How often should you be screened if you’re 30 years and older?

If your Pap test is normal and….

you are HPV - then

wait 3 years to repeat both tests I

you are HPV + then

wait 1 year to repeat both tests I

If your Pap test is abnormal and….

you are HPV - then

wait 1 year to repeat both tests I

you are HPV + then

you may need other tests and treatment

Facts about HPV and Cervical Cancer

  • HPV is a very common virus

  • The body usually fights off HPV naturally, but when it does not, HPV can cause cervical cancer

  • You can prevent cervical cancer by getting regular screening tests

  • Screening tests can find early signs of disease before cancer ever starts to grow

How many women are affected by cervical cancer?

Every year in the U. S., about 10,000 women get cervical cancer and almost 4,000 women die from it. But it is the most preventable female cancer with regular screening tests and early treatment

Be sure to schedule other important exams regularly

Even if you can safely wait 3 years between cervical cancer screening tests, remember to visit your doctor regularly for general health exams.

All women should have a regular visit with a health care provider to stay healthy.
