This project consists of six case studies which will document the experiences of six diverse hospital emergency room departments (ED) as they identify and implement patient flow improvement strategies. This study poses a common outcome goal across all six sites of improving patient flow/reducing ED crowding, but allows each hospital to adopt practices that fit its own needs and context. This approach rests on innovation research showing that organizational innovations are more successful when they are aligned with features of the adopting hospital. The six case study sites were selected to reflect diversity of size, ownership, teaching status, safety net status, and types of challenges with ED crowding. Participating hospitals will select interventions from the previously developed Uugent Matters Toolkit that they believe will work best to address the particular problems they face.
