Re: Stewardship Survey Renewal - NASS questions regarding supporting
statement and the survey instrument.
History:
This message has been replied to.
This was prior to the PIC survey. The BLM had it's own monitoring through
NAU that didn't involve the USFS. The survey was used under contract with
the BLM prior to the joint BLM - USFS contract with the PIC. I wouldn't
know if NAU still uses it or not but they no longer use it for the BLM.

NASS questions regarding supporting
statement and the survey
instrument.
Do you know the background of that survey; i.e. why it was developed?
Is it still in use elsewhere or maybe it was just a one time possibility?
In other words, NAU no longer uses the survey???
Was it planned for use by the BLM, but then decided to utilize the PIC/MSU
survey?
Anyway, I am confused about the survey and why it was developed.
Sure appreciate any information you can provide.
Thanks!!

Sharon,
The NAU survey hasn't been used in several years.

Stewardship Survey Renewal - NASS
questions regarding supporting
statement and the survey
instrument.
Maureen (and Brian)
Thanks bunches for your willingness to help me in answering the NASS
comments regarding renewal of the stewardship survey.
(Not exactly certain about the acronym - but they are national
statisticians and are required to review the documentation/survey
instrument prior to my sending it to OMB for approval.)
In the following document (Part B)
the NASS comments should be a different color from black and are
highlighted in yellow.
(I used track changes so I'm not exactly what color you are going to see
for the text.)
I just thought it might be easier by providing you the entire document (not
very long) rather than just the questions - provides more context when
responding.
Couple of questions to clear up some of my confusion, please:
First: Is the survey designed for a maximum of 30 minutes or 45 minutes?
The survey instrument shows 30 minutes, but I've also noted 45 minutes in
some of the documentation for the original submission to OMB three years
ago.
NASS picked up on this and want to know the estimated length of time it
will take for participants to complete the interview.
Second: Also, do you know anything about a similar survey that NAU used
(or may have used/designed) a few years ago?
NASS wants to know if they are still using it or if it's still available
because they are concerned about duplicate efforts.
I have a call in to Jim Bowmer at BLM but thought you may be able to also
enlighten me.
Evidently the BLM was allowed to participate in the PIC/MSU survey as long
as they didn't use the NAU survey.

NASS also had a couple of questions regarding the actual survey
instrument:
First Survey Question regarding 6b, please:
Please reference #6b - they said we needed a verb for "long term
relationships" and
that the "negative about collaboration" was very unclear and doesn't seem
consistent with the other options.
Do you want to revise these two "categories" of responses?
I tried to copy 6b below, but it lost it's formatting. So I put their
comments in bold italics.
6b. How did you define collaborative when you were answering this question?
Working with others
Achieving a common goal
Commenting on a proposed project
Working with other agencies
Increased level of public participation
(You need a verb here) Long term relationships
Including diverse people and interests
Having meetings
Negative about collaboration (This response category is very unclear and
doesn’t seem consistent with the other options.)
Other: Please specify.

Second Survey Question regarding #9, please:
Also, they thought question 9 was a bit unclear.
Do you want to revise #9 or go back to the old #9? I think the intent was
just to make the old #9 a littler easier to respond by using the new
format. I've shown both versions below.
The new question 9 is as follows:
9. Are there resources that community members needed to facilitate their
participation in the project? This is not clear to me if you are seeking
to know all resources community members need or just the ones they need and
didn’t get.
Yes
No
Don’t know
If yes, please check the appropriate boxes in the table below:
|---------------------+----------+----------+--------+-----------------|
| | Check if | Check if | From | For what |
| | needed | received | whom | specific purpose|
|---------------------+----------+----------+--------+-----------------|

| Technical | | | | |
|---------------------+----------+----------+--------+-----------------|
| Other (Please | | | | |

|---------------------+----------+----------+--------+-----------------|
The original question #9, as follows:
What kinds of resources, if any, does/did community members need to
facilitate their participation in the project? For each type of assistance,
have the respondent describe in more detail.
|-----------------------------+-----------------+-------------+----------|
| | Received | From whom? | For what?|
| | (yes/no) | | |
|-----------------------------+-----------------+-------------+----------|
| Financial | | | |
|-----------------------------+-----------------+-------------+----------|

|-----------------------------+-----------------+-------------+----------|
| Other (Please describe) | | | |
|-----------------------------+-----------------+-------------+----------|
| None. | | | |
|-----------------------------+-----------------+-------------+----------|
The rest of their comments to the survey were just formatting issues which
I can handle.
I've attached the revised survey and NASS comments below, just for your
information.
Here's the original survey for reference and is the one we need to use this
year.
THANKS BUNCHES for sharing your valuable time with me!!!
I'm definitely available this week, via phone/email, if you want to discuss
further - what ever is the easiest and quickest for you!
