In addition to the primary testing of the Census of Agriculture form, about 50 Navajo operators will be included and provided a slightly modified version of the form. Many Navajo operators operate land under permits on Federal trust land or tribal land. The operator should report agricultural activity on this land. The proposed Navajo version will not differ in content, but will include additional wording regarding land held in trust. In addition, questions specifically about American Indian reservations have been moved to earlier in the questionnaire. Finally, commodity tables where there were few or no reports of production from Navajo operators in the 2007 Census of Agriculture have been eliminated, with only screening questions asking about presence or absence of production included. If production is indicated in any of these questions, a follow up interview to collect that data would be required. The Director of our Arizona Field Office has been discussing the form with local Tribal officials and they have agreed to assist in testing the form.
