Dear Sir or Madam:
The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) strongly supports the continued collection of data by
the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on form MP-1, Annual and Quarterly Report of
Class I Motor Caniers of Passengers. The data collected on this foim aie crucial to key
components of BEA's economic statistics.
BEA uses data tioni this form to prepare estimates of the personal consumption expenditures
component of gross domestic product and of corporate profits in the national income and product
accounts. The data are also used induectly to estimate gross output for Hie tiansportation sector
in gross domestic product by industry. The Industiy program is cunently developing a
methodology for measuring quarterly GDP by industiy statistics in which quarterly NIPA data
will be crucial, as well as quarterly source data on output by industry'. Quarterly NIPA statistics
of PCE and corporate profits that rely on the Form MP-1 would be used m this methodologj'. A
table of items used and their uses is attached.
Please keep BEA informed about any modifications to these forms. We are particularly
interested in any modifications proposed during the forms' approval process that would
