The annual National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a major source of general statistics on the health of the U.S. population and has been in the field every year since 1957. This household-based survey collects demographic and health-related information on a nationally representative sample of households throughout the country. This request is to extend data collection for the core NHIS and to modify selected sections of the NHIS for the next three years to cycle in and cycle out supplementary questions.

The current NHIS burden is 28,017 hours. For the 2010 NHIS survey the total burden is estimated to be about 34,977 hours, an increase of 6,960 hours. The total burden is higher because the supplements are longer in 2010 and the sample size reflects a full sample.
