In response to the American Fisheries
Act (AFA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) developed a
management program for Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Management
Area (BSAI) pollock complete with a set of permits. This revision
incorporates the Chinook Prohibited Species Quota (PQS) Program
into the collection. The Chinook PSQ Program is established to
promote reduction of Chinook salmon PSQ in the BSAI pollock fishery
to the extent practicable while achieving optimum yield in the
pollock fishery. The focus of the Chinook PSQ Program is the BSAI
pollock fishery because this trawl fishery catches up to 95 percent
of the Chinook salmon taken as PSQ in the BSAI groundfish
fisheries. Non-Chinook salmon PSQ reduction measures will also
remain in effect.
