APPENDIX 4: PHASE 1 RECRUITMENT AND SCREENING SCRIPT



If returning a phone call:


Dial respondent’s telephone number [hereafter referred to as P] as indicated on audiotape recording.


  • Note: Speak only to P. If the number is answered by an answering machine, call back at another time. Do note leave a message.


  • Recruiter: Good morning/afternoon, may I speak to (name)?


If P is not available or not at home, say, “Thank you,” and try again at another time. If the person answering the phone inquires about who is calling, the recruiter may say “I am calling from the NORC, a national organization for research at the University of Chicago.”


If P has been successfully contacted, continue...


...Hello, my name is [Recruiter’s name]. I am calling from the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. You may remember that you answered an ad we placed in local health agencies. The ad was looking for women to help test survey questions on women’s health.


  • Wait for acknowledgment, such as, “Oh, yes, I remember.”


...To determine if you are eligible for our study, I’ll need just a minute to ask you a few questions. Answering these questions is completely voluntary. Your answers will be kept strictly confidential. Is this a good time to ask the questions or should I call back later?


  • If not a good time to talk, schedule a time to call back.

  • If good time to talk, continue with recruitment questions.


If the recruiter answers the phone:


Thank you for calling. We appreciate your interest in our study. To determine if you are eligible for our study, I’ll need just a minute to ask some background questions. Interviewer briefly explains how questions will be asked:


An interviewer will ask you a variety of health questions. Most of these questions will be about sexual violence. This can include unwanted sexual contact or non-contact such as verbal harassment. Then, the interviewer will ask you to explain what you were thinking as you answered the questions. She also will ask your opinion about some questions. Your answers will help us learn whether other women will find the questions easy or difficult. Everything you say will be kept private.


Do you have any questions at this point? Pause to answer questions. If (not/you have no other questions), then let’s get you on the schedule, ok? We will be interviewing (Day, Month/Date) through (Day, Month/Date) from xx a.m. to xx p.m. [The interviewing times will be determined in collaboration with the recruiting sites if the interview is conducted at the site.] Looking at your schedule, when would you be available to participate? Schedule an appointment. [If no, go to exit script 3.]


A reminder call will be made to you a few days in advance if you say it’s ok to call this number again. Exit script 1: I’m sorry, you have to be 18 to take part in this study and therefore we won’t be able to include you in the study. Thank you for your time.


Exit script 2: I’m sorry, we are looking for women of different ethnic or racial backgrounds. Therefore, we won’t be able to include you in the study. Thank you for your time.


Exit script 3: I see...ok, we were hoping to complete this particular study between (Month/Date) and (Month/Date), so it looks like we won’t be able to schedule you at this time. Thank you for your time.


[If at any point the respondent declines], Exit script 4: I understand that you don’t want to participate. Thank you for your time. We will not contact you again.
