Dear Provider,
In an effort to meet the growing behavioral health needs of today's military, TRICARE
Management Activity (TMA) Force Health Protection & Readiness (FHP&R) is undertaking an
important independent research effort to improve the retention of military mental health
providers. The goals of the research are to understand: 1) mental health providers' reasons for
joining the military and their expectations of service; 2) their reasons for staying in or leaving the
military; and 3) incentives that might encourage a mental health provider to extend his or her
service.
As part of this study, FHP&R has contracted with Mathematica Policy Research to conduct a
survey of current and former military psychologists and psychiatrists. Over the next several
weeks, you will receive an email from Mathematica containing a live link to a secure website
where you can complete the survey online. The link to the survey is embedded with a unique
username and password that grant you access to the survey. If you prefer not to complete the
survey online, the email will also contain a link to a .pdf version of the survey, which you can
print out, complete, and return to the address indicated on the survey.
For some of you, we may not have a current, working email address. In these cases,
Mathematica will mail you a packet containing a hard copy of the survey and a pre-labeled,
postage-paid envelope.
The survey is confidential, and will require about 15 minutes of your time. Your candid
responses will help FHP&R understand the specific needs and concerns of military mental health
providers, enabling us to identify areas where improvements are needed. Because you have been
selected as part of a random sample of current and former military psychologists and
psychiatrists, we urge you to participate in this important study so the results are as complete and
representative as possible.
If you have any questions about the study, or your rights as a study participant, please call Dr.
Kristen Purcell, Mathematica Project Director, toll-free at 1 (866) 917-2784.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,

Dr. Jill Carty
