Part V

Student Comments

  1. Suggested improvements

  • Better PowerPoint slides – more use of video (lecture excerpts or similar).

  • Better laptop computers with CD drives or ability to use thumb drives and wireless internet.

  • Course content is good. The rest is up to the instructors.

  • Update PowerPoint with text student manual or vice versa.

  • More practical references i.e., theory = this specific situation in the fire service.

  • This course needs to be updated.

  • Provide students with name cards and tent binder dividers. Save money – do not deploy NFA employees months following a disaster.

  • More pre-course work prior to arrival.

  1. Feedback for instructors

  • Volume and intensity of instructor #1 was overbearing at times, otherwise, good material presentation.

  • Outstanding job, extremely knowledgeable.

  • Don Woods is very committed to NFA, students and course; he just tends to drag issues out and therefore loses many students’ attention.

  • Don and Ron brought great knowledge and experience to the class.

  • Don Wood is obviously very knowledgeable and experienced in subject areas, but has a tendency to tell long war stories and get off track.

  • Dr. Wakeman covered Don Wood in several areas during the course.

  • We need more time to complete the homework assignments.

  • Thank you.

  • Thank you.

  • Don Wood tended to forget what he had covered and repeated material. Mr. Wood fell asleep during a video. Mr. Wood also handled an incident with a student about computer usage that was unprofessional and embarrassed the student and the class.

  • Both instructors were very well-versed in the subject. It is sometimes hard for fire service professionals to be treated or talked to as if they were high schools students.

  • More explanation on the project (day 1). It took 3-4 days for me to figure out where we were going.

  1. Additional and/or Other Comments

  • West Coast instructors should be more involved to increase diversity learning atmosphere. Update old material used.

  • The dorms need dorm room darkening shades. It would seriously help with sleeping. I could have read a book in my room with my lights out!

  • The use of the laptops greatly helped me; during this course.

  • Overall outstanding program. I learned concrete tools I can take home and apply to my FD. Thank you.

  • High speed wireless internet would improve the learning process. Recruiting instructors from other parts of the country (other than NE USA) would provide more diversity.
