OMB is pleased with this effort to restore the NCVS sample cuts in order to improve the quality of the estimates. We look forward to receiving the full report between Census and BJS regarding how the sample will be restored and monitored. In addition, the previous terms of clearance remain in effect: OMB is very supportive of the NCVS redesign proejct and looks forward to regular updates on the NCVS redesign process, with the full expectation that the next submission to this collection will clearly demonstrate substantial process. This progress includes strategies to meet stated redesign goals related to the precision of national estimates, a capacity to produce subnational estimates, and the role of "supplements" to address special topics. In addition, upates should include progress in bringing the "race of the offender" question into compliance with OMB standards on classification of race and ethnicity, as articulated in response to OMB questions.
