The National Notifiable Condition Messaging Support Strategy Questionnaire supports two existing OMB-approved information collections, the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) (OMB 0920-0728) and the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) (OMB 0920-0007). The Public Health Services Act (42 U.S.C. 241) authorizes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to disseminate nationally notifiable condition information. CDC's MMWR publishes incidence tables for nationally notifiable conditions reported through the NEDSS and other external surveillance data sources to the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS). NEDSS (OMB 0920-0728) an internet-based infrastructure for public health surveillance data exchange, uses specific Public Health Information Network (PHIN) and NEDSS electronic data and information standards to advance the development of efficient, integrated, and interoperable surveillance systems at federal, state and local levels. CDC is responsible for establishing and managing the national reporting system of epidemiologic data for notifiable conditions (diseases) via NEDSS. The data collected will be used by CDC's NEDSS program to gather information needed for formulating a technical and project management support strategy for 57 reporting jurisdictions (50 States, 5 Territories, New York City, and Washington, D.C.) as they implement NEDSS messaging for current national notifiable conditions. An estimation of the overall support needed will allow the NEDSS implementation and management teams to most effectively plan a timeline and distribute human and information technology (IT) resources.
