  1. NAEP 2010

  1. Coming Soon to <insert school>!

  1. What is NAEP?

  • NAEP” stands for the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

  • NAEP is the largest nationally representative assessment of what America’s students know and can do.

  • Tests are given to assess student achievement in major subject areas across the nation at grades 4, 8, and 12.

  • NAEP results are released as “The Nation’s Report Card.”

  1. What this means for our school

  • Our school has been selected to participate because of its location and demographics.

  • <insert school> is one of only about <insert number> high schools in <insert state> selected to participate in NAEP this school year.

  • Approximately 100 grade 12 students from our school have been randomly selected by NAEP to participate.

  1. What to expect

  • NAEP testing at our school will take place on <insert date> and will take about 90 minutes.

  • We will call you out of class to report to the testing room.

  • You will be given a hall pass telling you where to report.

  1. What to expect (continued)

  • Students will take a civics, geography, or U.S. history test.

  • Questions are multiple-choice and short answer.

  • The assessment also includes questions about how your teachers teach, your educational experiences, and other informational questions.

  1. What to expect (continued)

  • There is no need to study or prepare for NAEP.

  • You should try your best to answer each question. NAEP just wants to know how much grade 12 students know about the subject area.

  • Your results are anonymous, but they will be combined with the scores of other students to produce a report card for the nation.

  1. Civics Sample Question

  1. Geography Sample Question

  1. U.S. History Sample Question

  1. Your participation is important!

  • Each of you will represent hundreds of grade 12 students across the nation.

  • Important decisions about education are made using NAEP results.

  • You can contribute to improving the quality of education for every student in California and the country.

  1. Principals also play a role

  • Each principal will be given a survey to complete which contains information about

    • Demographic characteristics of the school;

    • What teachers teach and their course requirements; and

    • How teachers are trained about new content and teaching approaches.

  • This information, along with the student assessment, gives a broad picture of how students are taught across the nation.

  1. NAEP is important

  • You have received a great education here at <insert school>.

  • We want you to do your best because you will represent grade 12 students all across <insert state> and the country.

  • Participating in NAEP is a great way to do something good and contribute to the future of education.
