The following questions were rotated in from the 1997 or 2003 SDR questionnaire or developed new for the 2010 survey (1997 or 2003 item names are in parentheses):

2010 SDR Questionniare Changes: Questions Dropped


The following questions were included in the 2008 SDR questionnaire, but will be rotated out from the 2010 survey questionnaire:


2008 A38 – “During the week of October 1, 2008, were you working for pay (or profit) at a second job (or business), including part-time, evening, or weekend work?”


2008 A39 – “What was the title of the second job you held during the week of October 1, 2008?”


2008 A40“What kind of work were you doing on this job – that is, what were your duties and responsibilities on your second job? Please be as specific as possible, including any area of specialization.”


2008 A41“Using the JOB CATEGORY list on pages 12-14, choose the code that best describes the second job you held during the week of October 1, 2008.”


2008 A42“To what extent was your work on your second job related to your first U.S. doctoral degree? Was it…”

2010 SDR Questionnaire Changes: Questions Modified


Some questions were included in both the 2008 and 2010 SDR questionnaires, but the question wording or response options were altered. A description of the change, the 2008 question number and the question version used in the 2010 SDR version is below (SESTAT variable names are in all CAPS):

The reference date was changed throughout the questionnaire from October 1, 2008 to October 1, 2010.

2010 A16.2 (corresponds to 2008 A14.2) has a wording modification. The word “department” has been added before the word “chair”. Item will read “Dean (any level), department head or department chair”.

2010 SDR A18 (corresponds to 2008 A16) has a change to response category (3) Tenured. Respondents who select “Tenured” are directed to enter the year that they received tenure.

2010 A24.3 (corresponds to 2008 A22.3) has a change to the wording. The words “in a specific” are added after the word “or” so that it reads “Work with a specific person or in a specific place”.

2010 A36 (corresponds to 2008 A33) has an expanded range. Respondents can now enter seven digits for their salaries (instead of six, as it was previously).

2010 A40 (corresponds to 2008 A37) has modified response options. One response option from 2008 has been dropped: (4) Chronic illness or disability. The response options now read…

2010 A42 (corresponds to 2008 A43) has a new skip pattern. Respondents who report that their work was supported by the U.S. Federal government are directed to A43 (modified 2003 A41).

2010 A44 (corresponds to 2008 A44) has an expanded range. Respondents can now enter seven digits for their earned incomes (instead of six, as it was previously).

2010 D12 2010 D2 (corresponds to 2008 D2) contained two types of edits.  The first was the deletion of “LLB” from examples of (4) Other professional degree.  The second was the deletion of “etc.” from the (3) Doctorate and (4) Other professional degree example lists.

2010 E8 (corresponds to 2008 E8) has modified text for one response category. The text of response category (2) now reads “Born abroad of U.S. citizen parent(s).”

2010 E10 (corresponds to 2008 E10) has modified question text and description under the verbatim box. The word “foreign” has been dropped, so that it reads “country” in the question text and under the verbatim box.

2010 Hispanic indicator, has been modified from two questions to one: capturing Hispanic ethnicity in a single prompt. As in 2008, the 2010 SDR did not ask race/ethnicity (this measure is carried over from the SED) of all respondents. Thus this item was only relevant to respondents in the Web or CATI where the value was missing previously.

2010 E12 (Disability stem, corresponds to 2008 E12) has been modified to read: “… individuals with specific functional limitations.”)

2010 E16 (Contact Information, corresponds to 2008 E16) has an additional telephone number field as well as Home, Work, and Cell indicators for each number..

2010 E18 (corresponds to 2008 E19) has modified text for one response category. The text of response category (2) now reads “A web questionnaire on the Internet.”
