Dear Contact:
Enclosed is a copy of the National Prisoner Statistics (NPS 1B) form for the 2011 yearend data, and a link to the most recent report using NPS data: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX. I want to thank you for your continued participation in NPS, a core component of the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ data collections on prison populations. BJS uses the NPS data to track changes in prison populations nationwide, as well as in the states and Federal Bureau of Prisons. The 2011 collection is the 85th year of continuous data collection in the NPS, a national data collection program authorized by Congress in 1926. Practitioners, policy makers, researchers, and the general public, among others, use the reports and statistics derived from the NPS.
The Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, as amended (42 USC 3732), authorizes collection of these data. Your participation is voluntary but we need your help to make the NPS data complete and accurate. We request that you complete and submit your form by February 25, 2011.
You may submit your completed NPS 1B forms via web, fax, or mail. You can access materials for web submission at http://harvester.census.gov/nps/. Login and password information can found on the coversheet of the survey, left of the address. Information regarding mail and fax submissions can be found on the cover page of the survey. If you are in need of assistance, please feel free to contact Alonzo Johnson from the Governments Division of the U.S. Census Bureau, our collection agent, via email at: [email protected]; or by phone at (800) 352-7229; or Heather West, now with the Governments Division of the U.S. Census Bureau, via email ([email protected]) or phone at (301) 763-9808.
I also want to alert you to the fact that you will receive separate cover requests to participate in other BJS data collections during the upcoming year. These include: the National Corrections Reporting Program, the Annual Parole Survey, and the Annual Probation Survey. Without your assistance on each of these, BJS would not be able to provide comprehensive statistics and trends on correctional populations in the United States.
Thank you for your continued support of BJS’ statistical programs. If you need assistance with any matters related to the collection, feel free to contact me at (202) 514-1062 or at [email protected].
S incerely,
William J. Sabol, Ph.D., Chief
