Under the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, as amended (42 U.S.C 3732)Section 302, the Bureau of Justice Statistics would request advance year-end counts of the number of inmates in State and Federal prisons from corrections department of each state, the District of Columbia, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons to compile data on the movement of State and Federal prisoners. These data will form the basis for historical trend analyses.
