NAEP 2010
Coming Soon to <insert school>!
What is NAEP?
“NAEP” stands for the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
NAEP is the largest nationally representative assessment of what America’s students know and can do.
Tests are given to assess student achievement in major subject areas across the nation at grades 4, 8, and 12.
NAEP results are released as “The Nation’s Report Card.”
What this means for our school
Our school has been selected to participate because of its location and demographics.
<insert school> is one of only about <insert number> high schools in <insert state> selected to participate in NAEP this school year.
Approximately 100 grade 12 students from our school have been randomly selected by NAEP to participate.
What to expect
NAEP testing at our school will take place on <insert date> and will take about 90 minutes.
We will call you out of class to report to the testing room.
You will be given a hall pass telling you where to report.
What to expect (continued)
Students will take a civics, geography, or U.S. history test.
Questions are multiple-choice and short answer.
The assessment also includes questions about how your teachers teach, your educational experiences, and other informational questions.
What to expect (continued)
There is no need to study or prepare for NAEP.
You should try your best to answer each question. NAEP just wants to know how much grade 12 students know about the subject area.
Your results are anonymous, but they will be combined with the scores of other students to produce a report card for the nation.

Your participation is important!
Each of you will represent hundreds of grade 12 students across the nation.
Important decisions about education are made using NAEP results.
You can contribute to improving the quality of education for every student in California and the country.
Principals also play a role
Each principal will be given a survey to complete which contains information about
–Demographic characteristics of the school;
–What teachers teach and their course requirements; and
–How teachers are trained about new content and teaching approaches.
This information, along with the student assessment, gives a broad picture of how students are taught across the nation.
