Questions cut from the National Survey of Family Growth Questionnaires

Items marked with an * were deleted for both males and females.

All of these questions (except HF-1) are being deleted for both men and women. These questions were being asked for all men and all women.

Question numbers shown are those in the female questionnaire.

We estimate that these deletions will reduce average interview length by about 1.5 minutes for females and 1.4 minutes for males.

Female Section H (Male section I)

These two disability questions are being dropped, and replaced with the now-recommended questions used in the American Community Survey (ACS) and the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). (See Attachment 1 for the new questions).

*HD-11: (Asked of all men and women): The following 2 questions are about other health problems or impairments you may have. Are you limited in any way in any activities because of physical, mental, or emotional problems? (Yes, No.)

*HD-12: (Asked of all men and women): Do you now have any health problem that requires you to use special equipment, such as a cane, a wheelchair, a special bed, or a special telephone?

(Yes, No.)

*HE-3e (Asked if received a test for HIV outside of blood donation, to determine which kind of test was used):

Did this test use a swab from your mouth, blood from your finger, or blood from your arm? (Swab from mouth, blood from finger, blood from arm)

HF-1 (Asked of all women): Have you ever heard of Human Papillomavirus or HPV? This is different from Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV, which we were just talking about. (Yes, No)

Female Section I (Male Section J)

(Asked of all men and women): Please look at Card 83. Next, I would like to get your opinion on some matters concerning family life. I will read you some statements, and I would like you to tell me if you strongly agree, agree, disagree, or strongly disagree. The first is:

*IH-1: (Asked of all men and women):

It is better for a person to get married than to go through life being single. Do you strongly agree, agree, disagree, or strongly disagree?

(Strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree)

*IH-7: (Asked of all men and women):

The rewards of being a parent are worth it, despite the cost and the work it takes.

(Strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree)

*IH-11: (Asked of all men and women):

A working mother can establish just as warm and secure a relationship with her children as a mother who does not work.

(Strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree)

*IH-13: (Asked of all men and women):

It is more important for a man to spend a lot of time with his family than to be successful at his career.

(Strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree)
