The goal of the proposed study is to increase FNS's understanding of the farmers market environment such that it can inform future policy in a manner that attracts a greater numbers of farmers markets and SNAP shoppers. The proposed study involves a national survey of Farmers Market (FM) managers and Direct Marketing (DM) farmers to understand their current operations and how those affect participation in USDA nutrition assistance programs. In addition to the national study, two related sub-studies include: examination of the undercovereage of farmers markets on the sampling frame, and exploration of the market operation characteristics that influence SNAP recipients' decisions to shop at a farmers market.
