Instructions for Vacuum Bag Dust Collection

  1. Remove the frozen ice packs from the vacuum bag dust (VBD) sample collection kit and place them in your freezer.

  2. Call FedEx (1-800-463-3399) to schedule a pickup or determine where to drop off the shipment. If FedEx cannot pick up the shipment or accept a drop off today, place the kit contents in a safe place and keep the ice packs in your freezer so you can collect the sample on another day.

  1. On the day of sample collection, remove contents of the VBD sample collection kit from the shipping container (Photo 1).

  2. Place the sample ID label on the Vacuum Bag Dust Questionnaire (question 1). The ID on this label ends in SB-01. Then write the date and mark the day of the week (questions 2 and 3).

To be done Monday through Thursday. The dust bag or dust from your home vacuum cleaner will be sent for laboratory analysis.

  1. Put on the gloves provided. Gloves are to protect the VBD sample from soap or oil on your hands.

  1. Obtain the vacuum that is used most frequently in your home. If it is a handheld vacuum or a shop vac, obtain the standard sized vacuum that is used most frequently. If you do not have a standard sized vacuum, collect the VBD sample from a handheld vacuum or shop vac.

  1. Open one of the pieces of aluminum foil noting which side was inside the fold, and which was outside. Place the foil on the floor next to the vacuum cleaner with the outer side down. Open the other piece of aluminum foil. Place it on the floor with the outer side down, overlapping the first piece (Photo 2).

  • If you have a vacuum with a bag, go to step 8 below

  • If you have a bagless vacuum, go to step 12 on page 3

If you have a vacuum with a bag

  1. Carefully remove the bag from the vacuum cleaner.

  2. Place the vacuum bag on the top sheet of aluminum foil. If necessary, bend the bag so it fits on the foil. Fold the top piece of foil around the vacuum bag (Photo 3). If needed, fold the second piece of aluminum foil around the bag. Place the foil-wrapped vacuum bag in a resealable plastic bag. If you need to bend the foil-wrapped vacuum bag to fit it inside the resealable bag, that’s okay. Just be careful not to spill the dust.

  3. Remove any excess air out of the resealable bag and seal the bag.

  1. Label the plastic bag with the VBD sample ID label (Photo 4). The ID on this label ends with –SB01. Put this bag in another resealable bag. Remove any excess air and seal the bag. Place the remaining sample ID labels back in their bag and place in the shipping box.

  • Go to step 16 on page 4

If you have a bagless vacuum or reusable vacuum bag

  1. Carefully remove the dust collection container or reusable vacuum bag from your vacuum cleaner. Pour the dust from the container onto the aluminum foil. If you cannot pour the dust easily, reach in and grab the dust with your fingers (Photo 5).

  2. Shake the container over the foil to make sure you have removed as much of the fine dust as possible. If you spill the dust on the bottom sheet of aluminum foil, transfer the dust to the top sheet.

  1. Fold the aluminum foil around the dust. Use both pieces of aluminum foil, if required. Make sure only the inner side of the foil comes in contact with the dust. Place the foil-wrapped dust in a resealable plastic bag. If you need to bend the foil-wrapped dust to fit it inside the plastic bag, that’s okay. Just be careful not to spill the dust. Remove any excess air out of the resealable bag and seal the bag (Photo 6).

  1. Label the plastic bag with the VBD sample ID label. This label ends with –SB01. Put this bag in another resealable bag. Remove any excess air and seal the bag. Place the remaining sample ID labels back in their bag and place in the shipping box.

  1. Complete the rest of the questions on the Vacuum Bag Dust Questionnaire and make sure all questions were answered.

  1. Remove the frozen ice packs from your freezer. Open the insulated shipper, place about half of the ice packs in a single layer on the bottom. Place the vacuum bag dust sample inside the shipper. Place the rest of the ice packs around or on top of the sample (Photo 7). Fill the extra space with the packing material provided. Put on the Styrofoam lid.

Note: Do NOT place all the frozen ice packs on the bottom of the shipping cooler or insulate samples completely from the frozen ice packs with packing material.

  • Ensure the remaining VBD sample ID labels are in the shipper before it is sealed.

  1. Seal the insulated box with the tape strips provided. Write the date that the VBD sample is picked up or dropped off on the prepaid, prefilled FedEx label, addressed to the laboratory, and attach to the insulated box (Photo 8).

  • Ship the samples to the laboratory using FedEx.

  1. Place the completed questionnaire in the prepaid, preaddressed envelope. Seal the envelope and place it in U.S. mail.

  • Mail the Vacuum Bag Dust Questionnaire to the NCS Study Center Office using U.S. mail.
