1The highest detected indoor air levels exceed typical background indoor air levels and/or public health assessment comparison values

2Comparison values are determined for a 70-kg individual who inhales 20 cubic meters of air per day.  The cancer comparison value is the air concentration corresponding to an increased lifetime cancer risk of one-in-one million.

3The cancer risk estimate assumes continuous (i.e. uninterrupted) exposure for 24 years, which probably overestimates the amount of time that people spend in their basements, particularly if basements are used as storage areas.  Consequently, using these exposure assumptions likely overestimates the cancer risk.  If it is assumed that 8 hours per day are spent in the basement, the estimated cancer risk for EDF is low.

4Based on PDC.

(engineering controls designed to reduce exposure)

Groundwater migration-control trench & 7 pumping wells (IRM-1)

Agre eastern (downgradient) property line

Jan

1996

Designed to trap and remove contaminants in the groundwater flowing off Agre property

Concentrations of contaminants in off-site monitoring wells was reduced by 95%

Bioventing system (IRM-2)

Railroad Spurs (overburden soil) south of Agre property

Dec

1997

Biodegrade petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants in the overburden soil & aquifer

Biodegradation is working but not enough to significantly reduce high concentration of contaminants

Sump pump and air-tight cover (Aluminum Bilco door and air-tight neoprene seal)

Residence  A basement

(Washington St)

Apr

1998

Minimize potential for exposure to contaminants in sump water & vapor

Water is not physically accessible and airtight seal prevents vaporization

Air Filtration Devices

Residences A,B basements

(Washington St)

Apr

1998

Remove vapors that might be enter the residence from soil-gas

Contaminants not detected in indoor air
