TITLE OF INFORMATION COLLECTION: Survey on Interlibrary Loan/Resource Sharing Needs in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, 2013

PURPOSE: NLM requests approval to survey interlibrary loan librarians in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) to learn the reasons for the decline in the use of DOCLINE, NLM’s interlibrary loan system. Specifically, the survey will ask librarians about their satisfaction with DOCLINE and what other methods they are using to obtain medical literature. The data gathered from the survey will be used to supplement the information our team has gathered from a review of the interlibrary loan literature, our earlier work with three focus groups and will be used to make recommendations for future directions for DOCLINE as well as future activities and services NLM and the NN/LM can undertake to support network libraries’ needs in the areas of interlibrary loan or resource sharing.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONDENTS: Respondents will be interlibrary loan librarians from National Network of Libraries of Medicine who are also members of the DOCLINE network.

Answer: NLM maintains an online member directory of DOCLINE libraries which contains the name of the individual listed as the DOCLINE contact. We propose to create a database query to identify the name and email address of each DOCLINE contact from the database, and use the resulting list to send an invitation to take the survey through SurveyMonkey. If the institution does not have a DOCLINE contact, we will use the name of the Library Director from the database.
