Previous terms
of clearance continue: This collection is approved for 3 years,
with the understanding that all English and Spanish data collection
instruments used in the field will include a PRA statement with a
time burden estimate. USDA acknowledges that, in the absence of
baseline data, the design does not allow conclusions regarding the
impact of the summer demonstration programs on household food
security per se, only on whether participation in the summer
demonstration programs led to at least the same level of household
food security as in the subsequent fall. As such, USDA commits to
conveying this limitation whenever it presents the results of this
study, including in its reports to Congress.

In its efforts to identify ways to
reach a greater number of SFSP eligible children and facilitate
food security in the summer, the USDA has developed and begun to
implement four types of SFSP demonstrations to support enhancement
activities to increase attendance at summer programs. Demonstration
1, Extended Operation, will operate the SFSP in 196 sites for 40 or
more days than they usually operate their programs. In
Demonstration 2, Enrichment Activity, 30 sites will support
enhancement activities to increase attendance at summer programs
beginning summer 2010 and will continue operations during the
summer 2011. The Home Delivery Demonstration (Demonstration 3) will
offer delivery of up to two meals per day to the homes of eligible
children in rural areas. The Food Backpack Demonstration
(Demonstration 4) will provide weekend and holiday meals to
eligible children who are already participating in the SFSP. This
collection gathers data from parents of participants and program
officials to assess the implementation of the demonstration
projects.
