The U.S. Geological Survey is required to collect, evaluate, publish and distribute publish information concerning earthquakes. Respondents will have an opportunity to voluntarily supply information concerning the effects of shaking from an earthquake--on themselves, buildings, other man-made structures, and ground effects such as faulting or landslides. This information required is for studies of the nature of earthquakes and the mitigation of the impact of earthquakes on the public. The U.S. Government has collected these data continuously since 1930 using a similar questionnaire.

The agency estimate is adjusted from 200,000 to 300,000 This request increases by a factor of 1.5 the burden hours from our previous request. This adjustment is based on our experience in administering this collection over the past 3 years, during which we had many more responses than we anticipated in 2008. The number of responses depends strongly on where earthquakes occur with respect to population centers, and we do not know this in advance.
