Released: July 8, 2011
The total acres of barley seeded in Montana in 2011 are
reported at 780,000 acres, up from the 760,000 acres
planted in 2010. Montana ranks first in total barley acreage
in the United States, according to the USDA National
Agricultural Statistics Service, Montana Field Office. Sixtyeight percent of the barley seeded in Montana in 2011 was
varieties recommended by the American Malting Barley
Association, Inc. (AMBA). The top variety seeded in
Montana for the fourth year in a row was AC Metcalfe.

Hays is the second most common forage barley variety
planted in 2011 with 13,100 acres or 1.7 percent of the
total barley planted. It is a two-rowed hooded hay barley
developed by MSU, and is a cross between Haybet and
Baronesse varieties. Forage yields are similar to Haybet
and higher than Westford. Hays is about three inches
shorter and heads two days later than Haybet, however,
the two varieties have similar test weights.
TOP FEED VARIETIES

TOP MALTING VARIETIES
AC Metcalfe continues to be the leading malting barley
variety planted in 2011. Montana growers seeded 248,100
acres or 31.8 percent of the total acres of barley planted in
Montana. AC Metcalfe is a two-rowed malting barley
developed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, located
in Brandon, Manitoba. It is recommended by the AMBA,
has an 8 percent higher yield, but matures one day later
than Harrington. It is resistant to loose smut, and is
moderately resistant to the spot-form of net blotch,
surface-borne smuts, and common root rot. It has plump
kernels and high test weight, but it is susceptible to scald
and septoria.
Hockett is the second leading malting barley variety
planted in 2011. Montana producers planted 62,800 acres,
accounting for 8.0 percent of the total barley acres planted.
This variety is a two-rowed dryland malting barley variety
that was developed by Montana State University (MSU) in
2008.
Hockett was added to the AMBA list of
recommended malt barley varieties in 2010.
When
compared to Harrington, Hockett has a higher yield and
better malt quality given dryland conditions.
It is
susceptible to lodging and stripe rust.

Haxby remained the top feed barley variety planted for
feed in 2011 for the fifth year in a row. Producers planted
60,800 acres in 2011 up from 52,600 in 2010. This variety
accounts for 7.8 percent of the total barley acres planted
in Montana. Haxby is a two-rowed barley developed by
MSU. Yields are equal to Baronesse and Eslick and are
higher than Gallatin and Valier varieties. It is medium
height and maturity, and has superior performance in low
moisture conditions. Haxby has high test weights in both
dryland and irrigated areas.
Champion is the second most common Montana feed
barley variety in 2011. Montana growers planted 7,700
acres, accounting for 1.0 percent of the 2011 planted
acres. Champion was developed by WestBred LLC,
Bozeman, Montana in 1997. It is a cross between
Baronesse and Camas. It is a two-row spring barley that
has a semi-erect to intermediate growth habit. Champion
has fair to good resistance to lodging and shattering. It
also shows strengths to neck breaking and drought.

Conrad ranked third among malting barley varieties
seeded for the 2011 crop year. A total of 43,800 acres or
5.6 percent of all barley is planted to this variety. This
variety is a two-rowed malting barley variety that was
developed by Busch Agricultural Resources and is
recommended by AMBA. It has similar height and lodging
resistance as B1202, and is two to three inches shorter
than Harrington. The variety can be identified by having a
white pearl, a long-haired rachilla, and a rough beard.
Merit 57 is the fourth most common malting barley variety
in 2011. A total of 33,900 acres were seeded, accounting
for 4.3 percent of the total acres planted. Merit 57 came
from a backcross made in 1996 in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Merit 57 is a rough awned, late maturing barley, which
gives it a high yield potential.
Merit 57 exhibits
intermediate straw strength giving it resistance towards
lodging, slightly better than AC Metcalfe. Other qualities
include good resistance to shattering, fair to good
tolerance of straw breakage and drought.
TOP FORAGE VARIETIES
Haybet has been the top forage barley variety seeded for
the past twelve years. Montana farmers planted 73,800
acres, accounting for 9.5 percent of the total acres seeded
in 2011. It was developed cooperatively by the Agricultural
Research Service, USDA, and the Montana Agricultural
Experiment Station in 1989. It is a two-rowed, hooded,
white-kerneled spring hay barley. Compared to Horsford
hay barley, Haybet is 3 days later in heading and similar in
plant height and percent lodging. Haybet is higher in hay
yield than Horsford, but they are similar in yield.
Data compiled and summarized by the Montana Field Office of the National Agricultural
Statistics Service, an agency of USDA, as a service provided for the
Montana Wheat and Barley Committee and the American Malting Association, Inc.
