The purpose of this study is to improve the way we measure rape and sexual assault. The primary goal of this project is to improve the way this information is collected. Westat, a social science research organization in Rockville, Maryland, is working with the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) to develop and test these survey methods. We wish to recruit women survivors of rape or sexual assault to help us test the questions that are being considered for the survey. Beginning in December 2012, we would like to speak with women who are: Age 18 and older, English speaking, previous victim of rape or sexual assault. These interviews will be completed in-person, at the DC Rape crisis Center, and will last about 90 minutes. A second interview will be scheduled for approximately 2 weeks after the initial interview. Respondents will receive $40 for each interview as a token of appreciation for their time.

CONSENT FORM

Westat is conducting this research for the U.S. Dept. of Justice (DOJ) Bureau of Justice Statistics. We are developing a survey about unwanted sexual experiences and other types of violence against women. By taking part in this study, you are helping us develop (or improve the types of) questions asked in the survey. We will be conducting one 90 minute interview today and another 90 minute interview approximately two weeks from today. Each interview will ask you about any unwanted sexual experiences or other types of violence. Your participation is completely voluntary. You may stop at any time, and you can skip any questions you do not wish to answer.

We will ask you questions about unwanted sexual experiences or other types of violence that you have had in the past. We’re interested in hearing about what happened during these incidents, how you think about them now and how you might respond to questions about the incidents on a survey.
Some of the language we use is explicit, but it is important that we ask the questions this way so that you are clear about what we mean.
The questions we ask are detailed and some people may find them uncomfortable. If you become upset during the interview or want to stop the interview at any time, please let me know. If you become upset, we can provide resources you can access to help you.
All information obtained during this study will be treated as secure and will only be used to develop and improve the questionnaire. We will not share your answers with anyone outside of the research team.
Project researchers may observe the interview. The researchers will destroy the audio recording as soon as they complete the questionnaire development process.

Introduction

Thank you for agreeing to talk with me today. Let me tell you a little about Westat and what we’re going to do today.

Westat is a research company that conducts research on many different topics, under contract with many different organizations. This particular project is for the Department of Justice, specifically, the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Westat has been contracted to develop and a survey about unwanted sexual experiences. We will be interviewing thousands of women nationwide for this survey.

At this stage we are still developing the questionnaire and trying to figure out how to make it as easy as possible for people to understand and answer correctly. So the way this will work is I will ask the questions as if I were an interviewer sitting across from you in your living room. And you’ll answer them just like we were doing a normal survey. As best you can, try to think out loud as you answer the questions. At various times in the interview we’ll stop and talk about the questions and how you answered them. For example I may ask you to explain your answer in more detail or I might ask questions such as:

how did you come up with your answer, or
how did you remember that, or
what did it sound like that question was asking to you?

We are very interested in your feedback on the questions. At any time you should feel free to let me know if:

there are words you don’t understand, or
the question doesn’t make sense to you, or
you could interpret it more than one way, or
if the answer you are looking for is not provided.

These follow up questions may seem strange, but bear with me. They help me understand how well the questions are working.
