Project Title: Evaluations of the whiteness and color rendering of different correlated color temperatures of lamps

Research Study Description: The data from this research project will be used to improve lighting design and to aid light source manufacturers to create desirable products. Prior to participating in this study, and solely for the purpose of this research experiment, your visual acuity and color vision will be tested with standard clinical vision tests. If your visual acuity (with glasses or contact lenses, if you wear them) or color vision is found to be unacceptable for the purpose of this research experiment, your participation will conclude at that point.

In this experiment, you will be asked to initially spend 5 minutes seated under a reference light. Then, we present a pair of nominally white lights, A and B, illuminating a set of objects. Your task is to answer which of the lights looks more natural. Information on how to make this judgment, and the opportunity for you to ask questions will be given to you during the instructions. You speak your response and the Principal Investigator will record it. You will then wait for 1 min under a new reference light after which you will repeat the process of choosing a light source. There are five reference lights in one group. Experiment on one group will take approximately 10 min.

This task (experiment on one group) will be repeated for 4 trials, which is one experimental run (about 40 min). You will be asked to complete a total of 4 experimental runs, which will require approximately 3 hours. This can be done in one day or spread over multiple days. Limited demographic data (only age and gender) about you will be collected, but no personally identifiable information will be collected.

Your identity will be protected to the extent permitted by law, including the Freedom of Information Act. Members of the NIST Institutional Review Board, appropriate NIST researchers, and other appropriate Federal employees may review the records of this study. The data will be used by NIST researchers as herein described. All of the data will be recorded only by an assigned number, without identifiers, and will not be linked back to your identity in any way.

There are no risks or costs to you as a subject in this experiment. You will also not benefit by volunteering to participate in this experiment, except for gaining the satisfaction of contributing to this scientific pursuit. Your data will be recorded and reported by a pseudo-randomly assigned subject number. It is possible your experimental responses may be shown in scientific presentations and/or publications. However, identifying information will not be collected and, therefore, not included in any presentations of the data. No key will be kept that will link individual data to any personal or demographic information.

Participation in this experiment is voluntary and you may choose not to participate or to withdraw from participating at any time for any reason without penalty. In order to withdraw from this experiment early, just tell the PI, in person or by phone, that you would like to terminate your involvement. If you choose not to participate or to discontinue your participation at any time, your decision will not result in any penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.

There will be 20 subjects involved in this experiment for the project, “Evaluations of the whiteness and color rendering of different correlated color temperatures of lamps.”
