Corn Stocks Down 4 Percent from December 2010
Soybean Stocks Up 4 Percent
All Wheat Stocks Down 14 Percent
Corn stored in all positions on December 1, 2011 totaled 9.64 billion bushels, down 4 percent from December 1, 2010. Of
the total stocks, 6.18 billion bushels are stored on farms, down 2 percent from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, at
3.47 billion bushels, are down 8 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2011 indicated disappearance is
3.84 billion bushels, compared with 4.10 billion bushels during the same period last year.
Soybeans stored in all positions on December 1, 2011 totaled 2.37 billion bushels, up 4 percent from December 1, 2010.
Soybean stocks stored on farms totaled 1.14 billion bushels, up 4 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 1.23 billion
bushels, are up 3 percent from last December. Indicated disappearance for September - November 2011 totaled
905 million bushels, down 25 percent from the same period a year earlier.
All wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2011 totaled 1.66 billion bushels, down 14 percent from a year ago.
On-farm stocks are estimated at 405 million bushels, down 26 percent from last December. Off-farm stocks, at
1.25 billion bushels, are down 10 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2011 indicated disappearance is
490 million bushels, down 5 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Durum wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2011 totaled 47.8 million bushels, down 30 percent from a year ago.
On-farm stocks, at 24.5 million bushels, are down 47 percent from December 1, 2010. Off-farm stocks totaled
23.3 million bushels, up 7 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2011 indicated disappearance of
15.9 million bushels is down 50 percent from the same period a year earlier.
Barley stored in all positions on December 1, 2011 totaled 134 million bushels, down 26 percent from December 1, 2010.
On-farm stocks are estimated at 55.3 million bushels, 40 percent below a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 78.3 million
bushels, are 12 percent below December 2010. The September - November 2011 indicated disappearance is 41.5 million
bushels, 5 percent below the same period a year earlier.
Oats stored in all positions on December 1, 2011 totaled 78.6 million bushels, 22 percent below the stocks on
December 1, 2010. Of the total stocks on hand, 24.4 million bushels are stored on farms, down 28 percent from a year
ago. Off-farm stocks totaled 54.2 million bushels, down 19 percent from the previous year.
Grain sorghum stored in all positions on December 1, 2011 totaled 150 million bushels, down 37 percent from a year
ago. On-farm stocks, at 27.9 million bushels, are down 9 percent from December 1 last year. Off-farm stocks, at
122 million bushels, are down 41 percent from a year earlier. The September - November 2011 indicated disappearance
from all positions is 92.1 million bushels, down 38 percent from the same period in 2010.
Pulse crops stored in all positions on December 1, 2011 and the change from December 1, 2010 are: dry edible peas,
3.96 million cwt, down 53 percent; lentils, 3.94 million cwt, down 11 percent; Austrian winter peas, 129,000 cwt, down
33 percent; all chickpeas, 1,061,000 cwt, up 1 percent; small chickpeas, 420,000 cwt, up 24 percent; and large
chickpeas, 641,000 cwt, down 10 percent. Small chickpeas are defined as peas that will pass through a 20/64 inch round
hole screen.

On-Farm Grain Storage Capacity Up 2 Percent from Last Year
The United States on-farm storage capacity totaled 12.8 billion bushels on December 1, 2011, up 2 percent from
December 1, 2010. Iowa continues to lead all States with 2.05 billion bushels of on-farm storage capacity followed by
Illinois with 1.46 billion bushels. Other major States include Minnesota with 1.45 billion bushels, Nebraska with
1.11 billion bushels, North Dakota with 830 million bushels, and Indiana with 800 million bushels of on-farm storage
capacity. These six States account for 60 percent of the Nation’s on-farm storage capacity. On-farm grain storage capacity
includes all bins, cribs, sheds, and other structures located on farms that are normally used to store whole grains, oilseeds,
or pulse crops.

Off-Farm Grain Storage Capacity and Facilities
Capacity of off-farm commercial grain storage in the United States totaled 10.1 billion bushels on December 1, 2011, up
4 percent from December 1, 2010. The largest increase occurred in Illinios where an additional 91.0 million bushels of
capacity were added since December 1, 2010. Other notable increases were shown in Nebraska, where capacity increased
53.6 million bushels, and Ohio, where capacity increased 40.6 million bushels from a year ago. The largest decrease
occurred in Mississippi, where capacity decreased 2.3 million bushels from the previous year.
Illinois and Iowa remained the two largest off-farm storage capacity States during 2011 with 1.45 billion and 1.38 billion
bushels respectively. Kansas was the third largest followed by Nebraska and Minnesota. These five States accounted for
52 percent of the Nation’s off-farm storage capacity on December 1, 2011.
Off-farm grain storage capacity includes all elevators, warehouses, terminals, merchant mills, other storage, and oilseed
crushers which store whole grains, soybeans, canola, flaxseed, mustard seed, safflower, sunflower, rapeseed, Austrian
winter peas, dry edible peas, lentils, and chickpeas/garbanzo beans. Capacity data exclude facilities used to store only rice
or peanuts, oilseed crushers processing only cottonseed or peanuts, tobacco warehouses, seed warehouses, and storage
facilities that handle only dry edible beans, other than chickpeas/garbanzo beans.
Off-farm storage facilities totaled 8,899 on December 1, 2011, down 1 percent from December 1, 2010. States with the
largest number of facilities include Iowa with 890, Illinois with 860, Kansas with 725, Minnesota with 585, and Nebraska
with 485.

Statistical Methodology
Survey Procedures: The grain stocks estimates in this report are based on surveys conducted during the first two weeks
of December. Separate surveys are conducted to obtain the on-farm and off-farm estimates. The on-farm stocks survey is
a probability survey that includes over 83,500 operators selected from a list of producers that ensures all operations in the
United States have a chance to be selected. These producers are asked to provide the total quantities of grain stored on
their operations as of December 1, 2011. This includes all whole grains and oilseeds stored whether for feed, seed, or sale
as well as any stored under a government program.
The off-farm stocks survey is an enumeration of all known commercial grain storage facilities. This includes
approximately 8,900 facilities with 10.1 billion bushels of storage capacity. An effort is made to obtain a report from all
facilities. Reports of stock holdings are normally received from operations covering about 90 percent of the capacity.
Estimates are made for missing facilities to make the survey complete.
Estimation Procedures: On-farm and off-farm survey data are reviewed at the State and National levels for
reasonableness, consistency with historical estimates, and current crop size. After estimates are made for on-farm and
off-farm stocks, the totals of these two are combined and evaluated using the balance sheet approach. This method utilizes
other sources of data to check the reasonableness of the stocks estimates. Estimates of production, imports, exports,
crushings, millings, and all other recorded uses of grains and oilseeds are reviewed to make sure beginning stocks,
production, utilization, and ending stocks are within reasonable balance and present the best possible estimate of stocks.
Revision Policy: On-farm and off-farm stocks are subject to revision the quarter following initial publication and again in
the following December 1 Grain Stocks report published in January each year. Revisions can be made when late reports
are received, errors are detected in reporting and calculations, and production estimates are revised. Estimates will also be
reviewed following the 5-year Census of Agriculture. No revisions to these years will be made after that date.
Reliability: Reliability of the on-farm and off-farm stocks must be treated separately because the survey designs for the
two surveys are very different. The on-farm stocks estimates are subject to sampling variability because all operations
holding on-farm stocks are not included in the sample. This variability, as measured by the relative standard error at the
United States level, is approximately 1.5 percent for corn, 1.8 percent for soybeans, and 2.2 percent for all wheat. This
means that chances are approximately 95 out of 100 that survey estimates for stocks will be within plus or minus
3.0 percent for corn, 3.6 percent for soybeans, and 4.4 percent for all wheat of the value that could be developed by
averaging the estimates produced from all possible samples selected from the same population and surveyed using the
same procedures. The relative standard errors for sorghum, barley, and oats are 9.0, 3.6, and 3.1 percent, respectively.
Survey indications are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication, imputation for missing data, and
mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. Off-farm, as well as on-farm stocks, are subject to these types of
errors. These errors cannot be measured directly, but they are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data
collection process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
