A violent death is defined as a death
due to suicide, homicide, an event of undetermined intent, legal
intervention or unintentional firearm injury. The purpose of the
National Violent Death Reporting System is to generate public
health surveillance information at the national, state, and local
levels that is detailed, useful, and timely.
