Alfalfa Seed Acres Down 23 Percent

Producers in Idaho harvested 8,500 acres of alfalfa seed in
2010, down 23 percent from the 2009 crop. Average yield, on a
clean basis, was 960 pounds per harvested acre in 2010, up 30
percent from the previous year. Production for 2010 totaled
8.16 million pounds, a slight increase from 2009 crop. The
average price received by growers for the 2010 crop decreased
$8 per hundredweight from the previous year to $199 per
hundredweight, resulting in a farm level value of production of
$16.2 million.
Harvested acreage of red clover seed in Idaho totaled 1,600
acres during 2010, up 600 acres from 2009. Average clean
yield was 600 pounds per acre, up 50 pounds from the previous
year. Production for 2010 totaled 960,000 pounds, up 75
percent from 2009. The average price received by growers for
the 2010 crop was $165 per hundredweight, down $26 per
hundredweight from 2009. This resulted in a farm level value
of production of $1.58 million. This survey was completed in
cooperation with the Idaho Alfalfa and Clover Seed
Commission.
