A.8. Abstract:

The Employment Projections program at BLS has developed two videos on the occupations projected to grow the fastest from 2012 to 2022, and we would like to obtain feedback on the usefulness and quality of the videos. Program offices are exploring approaches for making data more available and appealing to a wider audience, and the use of videos is one of the more promising approaches.

Every two years, BLS projects employment 10 years into the future for more than 800 occupations. Overall growth from 2012 to 2022 is projected to be about 11 percent, but some occupations are projected to grow much faster than that. The top 10 fastest growing occupations are presented in these videos, along with descriptions of what people in the occupations do, where they work, how much they earn, and why employment growth is projected to be fast.

The respondents will be visitors to the Beta site of BLS.gov who volunteer to view the videos (there is no monetary incentive). BLS has 26,000 Twitter followers, and we plan to publicize the availability of these videos through Twitter and our email subscription service. Based on past experience, we’re hoping to obtain 300 respondents within two weeks.

There is no experimental design. There are two versions of the video: a short version, and a longer version. Visitors to the website will be free to view either video (or both). A link to a SurveyMonkey evaluation instrument will be placed on the website with a text link that reads “Please complete a brief evaluation of the video.”

We estimate that each survey will take approximately 3 minutes to complete for an estimated maximum of 15 burden hours (300 x 3 minutes).

No pledge of confidentiality will be given. The following statement will be given to respondents: This survey is being administered by Surveymonkey.com and resides on a server outside of the BLS Domain. BLS cannot guarantee the protection of survey responses and advises against the inclusion of sensitive personal information in any response.
