The purpose of this letter is to provide an update to the testing the Census Bureau is doing on the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) Pension Module, the Current Population Survey (CPS) Email and Internet Mode Supplement, and a series of questions to gauge the American public’s perception of using their own devices for work purposes. This request was approved by OMB on June 5, 2013.

The recruiting criteria outlined in the original request were targeted based on the content of the SIPP Pension Module. Late in the planning process the questions to gauge the American public’s perception of using their own devices for work purposes were added. Consequently, in six of the 12 interviews conducted to date, the respondents did not have a smartphone or tablet device, and thus were not asked questions about whether they would be willing to use their devices for work-related purposes.

We request approval to conduct an additional seven interviews, which will be targeted towards respondents who have either a smartphone or tablet device. The seventh interview is requested in case an upcoming interview has a respondent without a smartphone or tablet device. For the remainder of the interviews, we plan to recruit respondents who have smartphones or tablets in addition to the job-related criteria.

The estimated time for completion of each cognitive interview is one hour. Thus, the estimated burden for the additional research is seven hours.
