This is an update to conduct usability testing of the 2013 American Community Survey (ACS) online instrument to identify issues that are problematic and frustrating to the user, which was submitted submitted under the generic clearance for questionnaire pretesting research (OMB number 0607-0725) on April 17, 2013 and approved on April 30, 2013.
After conducting the first round of the usability test, the survey sponsors at the ACS requested the same number of participants in the second round as we had in the first round of testing so that we can have comparable results from Round 1 to Round 2.
Our original request was for a total of 15 interviews (10 in the first round and 5 in the second round) and 22.5 burden hours. The new request is for a total of 20 interviews (10 in the first round and 10 in the second round) and 30 burden hours. To date we have completed the first round of usability testing with 10 participants. We are preparing for the second round of testing, which will start in October. To complete the second round we request an additional 8 hours.
We will video-record the usability sessions with the participants’ permission to aid researchers in accurately reporting findings and recommendations. Before beginning the usability sessions, we will inform participants that their response is voluntary. We also will inform the participants that the information they provide is confidential. We will be paying participants $40 for their participation on this project.
