RE: High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) Transcript and 2013 Update Collection Responsive Design Questionnaire Change Request (OMB# 1850-0852 v.13)

We request approval to include an additional item from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) 2013 Update full interview in the 2013 Update abbreviated interview, to be implemented this fall: the name of the last high school attended by the sample member. This submission amends the clearance obtained on April 19, 2013, and May 22, 2013, for the 2013 Update of HSLS:09 sample members who were in 9th grade in the fall of 2009 (OMB# 1850-0852 v. 11 and 12).

Asking this item of all 2013 Update respondents, including abbreviated interview respondents, will provide important information about high school attendance/completion and will be used for collecting high school transcripts in 2013-2014. Base-year and first follow-up high school names are preloaded into this item so that respondents pick a preloaded high school when applicable. Based on timing information for this item among the 2013 Update respondents to date, this item takes 12 seconds on average. The overall burden estimate for the abbreviated interview remains 5 minutes per abbreviated interview respondent.

Data collection for the 2013 Update began in June 2013 and is scheduled to be conducted through October 2013. The abbreviated interview is being programmed right now and will be offered during the last 3 weeks of data collection. The additional item (already being asked in the full interview) is as follows (from pp. 4-5 of the attached Appendix 2; newly-added asterisks signify inclusion in abbreviated interview):
