A. Reading Assessment—E-mail Recruitment Message for Parents of Middle School Students, on Department of Education Letterhead
Subject: NCES Research Study for Middle Grade Students and Their Parents
Dear <NAME>,
My name is <CONTACT NAME>, and I am contacting you from <DECISION INFORMATION RESOURCES www.dir-online.com)/MATHEMATICA POLICY RESEARCH (www.mathematica-mpr.com)>. We are recruiting 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to participate in research interviews to support the development of assessment items and survey questions for a national research study. Participation is completely voluntary, and all responses may only be used for statistical purposes and may not be disclosed or used in identifiable form for any other purpose except as required by law (Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002 [ESRA 2002], 20 U.S.C., § 9573). Students who participate will receive a $25 Visa gift card for taking part in the interview. In addition, you will receive a $25 Visa gift card for your time and effort if you bring your child to and from the interview site.
The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) would like to know if middle grade students understand the assessment questions being developed for the study, called the Middle Grades Longitudinal Study of 2016-2017 (MGLS:2017). Your child will be asked to participate in an hour-long session at one of our corporate offices or, if you live more than 30 minutes from our offices, in a community space close to you (such as the public library). Participating students will be asked to answer a series of reading assessment items on a computer. A researcher will observe students one-on-one while they complete the task and will conduct a brief interview at the end. Students will not be graded on their responses.
The feedback received from your child will provide NCES with valuable information they will use to improve the student reading assessment and refine the way items are administered to students in the national research study.
If you are interested in having your child participate in this very important research study, please call <CONTACT PHONE> or e-mail <CONTACT E-MAIL>. We look forward to speaking with you soon.
Thank you,

B. Assessments and Student Questionnaire—E-mail Recruitment Message for Parents of Middle School Students with Disabilities, on Department of Education Letterhead
Subject: NCES Research Study for Middle Grade Students and Their Parents
Dear <NAME>,
My name is <CONTACT NAME>, and I am contacting you from <DECISION INFORMATION RESOURCES (www.dir-online.com)/MATHEMATICA POLICY RESEARCH (www.mathematica-mpr.com)>. We are recruiting 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to participate in research interviews to support the development of assessment items and survey questions for a national research study. An important component of this study is ensuring the inclusion of all students, including students with disabilities. We want to make sure that the questions we ask students are clear and understandable. We also want to learn more about the types of accommodations that students may need to fully participate in this research study.
Participation is completely voluntary, and all responses will only be used for statistical purposes and will not be disclosed or used in identifiable form for any other purpose except as required by law (Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002 [ESRA 2002], 20 U.S.C., § 9573).
Participating students will be asked to do one of the following four activities: (1) answer a series of math assessment items with paper and pencil, (2) complete a series of tasks on a computer, (3) answer a series of reading assessment items on a computer, or (4) answer a series of paper-and-pencil survey questions. A one-on-one interview will follow whichever activity the student is asked to complete. Students will not be graded on their responses.
We recognize that some of the tasks we are asking students to complete may be challenging. Our staff is experienced and well-trained in observing and interacting with students, including students with disabilities, and recognizing when they are becoming frustrated. We will work closely with each student to make sure they are comfortable, and will provide any needed accommodations such as breaks, switching the student to a different task, talking with them to understand the source of their frustration, or stopping the activity completely.
The feedback received from your child will provide NCES with valuable information they will use to improve the assessment items and survey questions that will be included in the national research study. If you are interested in having your child participate in this very important research study, please call <CONTACT PHONE> or e-mail <CONTACT E-MAIL>. We look forward to speaking with you soon.
Thank you,

J. Thank You Letter to Parents of Student Participants (with parent interview)
Subject: Thank You for Your Participation
<DATE>
Dear <NAME>,
On behalf of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), part of the U.S. Department of Education, thank you for allowing <CHILD’S NAME> to participate in the Middle Grades Longitudinal Study of 2016-17 (MGLS:2017) research interview. <CHILD’S NAME>’s input helped us evaluate questions for the MGLS:2017. The assistance your child provided, combined with input from other students, was incredibly useful and informative. We greatly appreciate you taking the time to bring your child to and from the interview location to participate.
We also want to thank you for the valuable input you provided during the one-on-one interview about parent survey items. We will use your feedback, combined with comments from other parents, to refine the parent survey instrument before the national study.
Sincerely,
